Encora Reuse

Smart reuse —
no app required

Encora helps campuses, cities, and foodservice operators run reusable container programs with QR/RFID checkout, text/email reminders, verified returns, and replacement-fee tracking — no app download required.

Built on the same verification layer as RetAI

Why reuse programs fail

Reusable container programs have strong intent but weak infrastructure. Containers go missing, returns are manual, staff lack visibility, and requiring participants to download another app kills adoption before it starts.

  • Containers lost with no record of where or when
  • Manual staff check-in creates bottlenecks and errors
  • No operator dashboard — no way to send reminders or track recovery
  • App-required workflows exclude the majority of participants
  • No audit trail for sustainability reporting

Pilot metrics we track together

Every pilot produces a shared report across these dimensions.

Return rate

% of containers returned in the period

Container loss rate

Containers not returned after X days

Verified check-ins

Returns with a complete intake record

Late returns

Returns past expected window

Manual staff touchpoints

Incidents requiring staff intervention

Reminder effectiveness

Return rate lift after automated nudges

Recovery rate

Containers recovered after loss alert

Three-step reuse

01 — Borrow
01

01 — Borrow

A QR, staff scan, or RFID workflow links a tagged container to the student, customer, phone number, or account.

02 — Remind
02

02 — Remind

Text or email reminders tell users when and where to return. Standard return window: 7 days.

03 — Return + Clear
03

03 — Return + Clear

RFID, QR, or staff scan checks the container back in, marks it returned, and clears it from the user's account.

How students use it

Three participation modes cover self-service, optional app loyalty, and staff-led flows.

App-less QR

Default. No download. SMS/email reminders.

Encora App (optional)

Rewards, history, push reminders.

Staff/RFID (BOH)

Low-range RFID for fast assignment; no stray scans.

How it works

Every container checkout and return creates a simple record — so operators can see what is out, what came back, and what still needs follow-up.

01 — Assign

A QR, staff scan, or RFID workflow links a tagged container to a student, customer, phone number, or account.

02 — Use

The participant takes the meal as usual. The container remains assigned while checked out.

03 — Remind

Users receive text or email reminders with the return deadline, approved return location, and instructions. Standard return window: 7 days.

04 — Return

At a smart bin or assisted return point, the tagged container is checked in by RFID, QR, or staff scan.

05 — Clear

The container is marked as returned and cleared from the user's account. Late or missing containers may trigger a replacement fee.

06 — Track

Operators can view return status, late containers, reminder activity, recovery rates, and container inventory from the dashboard or reporting workflow.

Return policy

Participants have 7 days to return checked-out containers. Encora can send text or email reminders with the return deadline, approved return locations, and simple return instructions. Containers checked in on time are cleared from the user's account. Late or missing containers may trigger a replacement fee based on the pilot policy.

Why it works

Reuse programs live or die on follow-through. Encora tracks every container from checkout to return — giving operators the visibility to send reminders, recover containers, and report outcomes.

Return recordsEvery return is logged with a timestamp and container status — operators can use records for reminders, replacement fees, recovery, and reporting.
Operations visibilityOperators can see late returns, return patterns, and container recovery trends without manual tracking.
Integration-ready workflowsReturn records can support campus or operator reporting, reminder workflows, and configured exports or API connections where available — no rip-and-replace required.
